Luton Airport is close, and we are closer

London Luton sits around twenty one miles from Bedford, normally about half an hour by road down the A6 or via the M1. It is comfortably the nearest airport, and since we are based near Luton itself, a Bedford transfer is a short run on roads we use constantly rather than an outlying job.

Luton has a single terminal, which removes the part of airport travel that most often goes wrong: there is no inter-terminal transfer, no ambiguity about which building you need, and a short walk from the drop-off to check-in. For an early departure, or for a return at the end of a long day, that simplicity is worth a lot.

The train alternative, described honestly

Bedford is the northern terminus of the Thameslink route, and there is a direct service to Luton Airport Parkway that takes under half an hour and runs frequently through the day. The Luton DART then connects Parkway to the terminal in about four minutes, around the clock. If you are travelling light and at a reasonable hour, that is a perfectly good way to reach a flight and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

A chauffeur is the better answer when the picture changes: luggage for a family holiday, a departure before the service is running usefully, several of you travelling together, an early flight where a missed connection matters, or simply a trip where you would rather not manage any of it. The car collects from your door and delivers you to the terminal entrance.

Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and beyond

The longer transfers are where a chauffeured car makes the clearest difference. Heathrow and Gatwick mean a run south down the M1 and around the M25, Stansted heads east via the A421 and the A1, and Birmingham is a realistic northern option from Bedford. These are journeys of an hour or more, usually with luggage and often at an awkward time, where the alternative is an early train with two changes and a lot of standing about.

For departures we plan the drop-off around the airport rather than around a rule of thumb: at Luton there is an express drop-off directly in front of the terminal and a free alternative in the long stay car park served by a shuttle, and which one is right depends on the time and the traffic.

Families, groups and awkward hours

Cases, car seats and tired children do not combine well with a station platform and a shuttle bus, and a group splitting across two taxis before dawn is a poor start to a holiday.
